How To Find Your Niche As A Content Creator
“Just pick a niche.” Cool. Thanks. Really helpful when you’re a whole human being with nine interests and a job.
The niche question feels heavy because it sounds permanent. Like you’re signing something in blood. You’re not. You’re picking a starting door, and doors open into other rooms.
Look backward before you look forward
What do people already ask you about? Not what you wish they asked. What actually lands in your DMs and group chats. Your friend texting “hey what protein powder do you use” is market research. Free market research.
Write down the last five questions people brought to you. There’s usually a pattern sitting right there, and you’ve been walking past it for months.
The overlap trick
Try this. Take three things you’re into and stack them. Fitness, plus night shift work, plus budget cooking. That’s not three niches. That’s one very specific person you can talk to directly, and almost nobody else is talking to them.
Broad is safe and invisible. Specific is scary and memorable. “Fitness tips” gets scrolled past. “Workouts for nurses on 12-hour shifts” gets screenshotted into a group chat of nurses.
Test it for 30 days before you commit
Don’t rebrand everything on day one. Just post about your maybe-niche for a month. Watch what happens. Which posts get saved? Which ones get comments that sound like real humans instead of emoji spam?
The data will tell you faster than your feelings will. And maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never seen anyone think their way to the right niche. They post their way there.
Your niche will drift, and that’s fine
The creators you admire? Most of them started somewhere narrower. You earn the right to widen out once people trust you for one thing first.
So pick the door. Walk through. You can always come back into the hallway.
