How To Write A Good Instagram Bio

You get about three seconds and 150 characters to stop someone leaving. The bios that work are about the reader, not about you. They answer one question.

An Instagram app icon on the left, an arrow running from it to a phone on the right showing a profile. The bio area under the follower counts is outlined and holds five blank lines, each with its own small icon, above the Follow and Message buttons.

How To Write A Good Instagram Bio

You get about three seconds. Someone taps your profile, their eyes hit that little block of text, and they decide. Stay or leave.

Three seconds. 150 characters. No pressure.

Your bio is not about you

I know, the name literally says otherwise. But the bios that work are about the reader. They answer one question. What’s in this for me?

“Digital marketer | Coffee lover | Dog dad | Living my best life” tells me nothing I can use. Compare that to “I help small cafés get found on Google. Free checklist below.” Now I know exactly whether to stay.

The formula that actually works

Line one, who you help and what changes for them. Line two, proof, or something that makes you specific. Line three, what to do next.

Something like this. “Helping freelancers double their rates. 400+ clients coached. Free pricing guide, link below.” Three lines. Zero mystery.

Small things that matter more than you’d think

Your name field is searchable. Your bio text isn’t. So put your keyword there. Not just “Priya” but “Priya | Nutrition Coach.” That’s how people find you when they search.

Skip the emoji wall. One or two for rhythm is fine. Fifteen makes it unreadable, especially on smaller screens.

And write like you talk. “I’ll help you fix your finances” beats “Empowering individuals to achieve financial wellness.” One sounds like a person. The other sounds like a bank.

One clear next step

Pick a single call to action. Not four links, not “DM me, or email, or book a call, or check the site.” Confusion kills clicks. One door.

Go look at your bio right now, honestly. Would a stranger know what you do and why they should care? If you hesitated, you’ve got your next ten minutes sorted.
